Krishna Janmashtami (कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी) celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, observed on Krishna Ashtami of Bhadrapada month (roughly August-September).
Devotees fast through the day and break it at midnight (Nishita Kaal), the traditionally observed moment of Krishna's birth.
Grains and regular meals are avoided until the midnight breaking of the fast; many devotees observe a complete Nirjala (waterless) fast.
