Vimshottari Dasha Explained
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology — it's how astrologers time when a particular planet's influence is most active in your life, rather than just describing your personality in general.
The 120-Year Cycle
Vimshottari Dasha divides a person's life into a repeating 120-year cycle, split among the nine classical grahas, each ruling a fixed number of years:
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
How the Starting Point Is Set
The starting Mahadasha lord is determined entirely by the Moon's Nakshatra at birth — each of the 27 Nakshatras has a ruling planet, cycling through the same nine lords three times. Your first Mahadasha is whichever planet rules your birth Nakshatra, and the portion of that Mahadasha remaining at birth depends on exactly how far through that Nakshatra the Moon had traveled.
Mahadasha and Antardasha
Within each Mahadasha, there are further sub-periods called Antardasha — the same nine planets, running in the same fixed sequence, but scaled down to fit inside the Mahadasha's span. This is why two people currently in the same Mahadasha can still be experiencing quite different things: their Antardasha lord differs.
Why It's Useful
Rather than reading a birth chart as one static picture, Dasha lets an astrologer say "this is a Saturn period for you, running from this planet's house and sign placement" — connecting the chart's structure to a specific window of time. Our Kundli tool computes your full Mahadasha timeline along with your currently running Mahadasha and Antardasha automatically, based on your exact birth details.
